Generation Sector Update

May, 2007

Generation Program Participants:

Effectively addressing O&M issues is a constant concern to our members. EPRI has developed a technology deployment roadmap that provides guidance in determining where you find yourself on the technology curve. We are working toward establishing an integrated program approach for leveraging and evolving our R&D portfolio to maximize its usefulness to you.

In this report, we would like to note the following highlights:

The Production Cost Optimization Project was initiated in April, and participants will commit to a 1% improvement in heat rate.

The Value of the Option to Capture and Store CO2 from Integrated-Gasification–Combined-Cycle and Pulverized Coal Power Plants, a recently published Technical Update (EPRI report 1014879), provides an interesting analysis suggesting strategies for new coal plants.

Sincerely,

Chris Larsen
Vice President, Generation

COMBUSTION TURBINED CYCLE ISSUE AREA

Combustion Turbine (CT) and Combined-Cycle (CC) O&M (Program 79)

EPRI launches project to study the performance and emissions of utility gas turbines fired with bio-diesel.

New Combustion Turbine/Combined-Cycle Design, Repowering and Risk Mitigation (Program 80)

Updated EPRI report on Mitsubishi Heavy Industries gas turbines includes information on new M701F4 engine.

GENERATION PLANNING: ECONOMICS AND FUELS ISSUE AREA

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS ISSUE AREA

Combustion Performance and NOX Control (Program 71)

Production Cost Optimization Project initiated.

Integrated Environmental Controls (Program 75)

New TOXECON™ II sorbent injection system delivers high mercury capture short term, but with O&M issues.

Impacts of low-quantity injected carbon on ash usability in concrete are inconsistent.

Full-scale demonstration of low-temperature mercury oxidation catalyst in holding pattern as a result of DOE budget reductions and escalated construction costs.

Particulate and Opacity Control (Program 76)

SmartAsh™ System shows hopper operating issues within days of startup.

Coal Combustion Product Use (Program 78)

Washington meeting on agricultural uses of FGD gypsum stimulated EPA and USDA interest in joint work with EPRI to demonstrate environmental acceptability.
