CoalFleet for Tomorrow-Future Coal Generation Options (Program 66)

In April, Foster Wheeler Italiana (FWI) was selected as the contractor to perform EPRI’s Integrated-Gasification–Combined-Cycle (IGCC) Cost and Performance Study funded out of Program 66B.

FWI, viewed as a leader in the field, has significant experience in similar studies, many of which have been published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) over the last several years. The selection was made after sending a request for proposal to 11 companies. The result provides a significant amount of cost sharing by FWI, which increases the project value to EPRI and its members.

Version 1 of the CoalFleet Guideline for Advanced Pulverized Coal Power Plants, EPRI report 1012237, is currently available for member download on the EPRI Program 66 web site. The guideline provides an overview of the state-of-the-art and emerging technologies for PC-fired generating units along with lessons learned from coal plants worldwide. The report aims to facilitate the timely deployment of reliable, next generation units that incorporate the following:

  •   Higher steam conditions for increased efficiency and reduced generation of pollutants
  •   Advanced environmental controls for reduced emissions and environmental impacts
  •   Techniques for CO2 capture or the future retrofit of CO2 capture that minimize impacts on efficiency and capacity

This report is the first step in an ongoing collaborative effort by the CoalFleet Advanced PC Working Group, which includes more than 30 participants from CoalFleet member companies, EPRI staff, and expert consultants. The report reflects information from EPRI, DOE, power producers, equipment suppliers, plant designers, and engineering procurement and construction companies.
