Nuclear Executive Update
An EPRI Progress Report, March 2011
TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS
Self-Assessment Guidance Supports Improved Maintenance and Equipment Reliability

A series of EPRI reports provide detailed guidance for planning and performing self-assessments in a number of programmatic areas.

EPRI has developed several guidelines that enable nuclear power plants to conduct self-assessments and drive improvements in several programmatic areas: predictive and preventive maintenance, maintenance effectiveness, work planning, foreign material exclusion, fluid sealing, and equipment reliability. Each guideline describes the self-assessment process, identifies specific focus areas, and provides a scorecard for gauging performance. The guidelines were written to allow a nuclear plant to conduct the assessment using internal staff or a third-party consultant.

  • Predictive Maintenance Self-Assessment Guidelines for Nuclear Power Plants (Report 1001032): This report describes the objectives and potential benefits of a predictive maintenance assessment, providing detailed guidance for planning and conducting the assessment as well as specific evaluation criteria, sample forms, and credentials for participants.
  • Guideline for Assessing Maintenance Effectiveness: A Self-Assessment Guideline for Nuclear Power Plants (Report 1002932): This guideline defines the key categories, elements, and sub-elements that contribute to a well-organized maintenance program, in terms of attributes that typically describe a high level of performance generally accepted by the industry.
  • Preventive Maintenance Program Implementation Self-Assessment Guidelines for Nuclear Power Plants (Report 1014798) and Work Planning Assessment Guidelines for Nuclear Power Plant Personnel (Report 1015253): These guidelines provide a graded approach for assessing preventive maintenance and work planning practices, including criteria for scoring and benchmarking against a number of industry-developed performance metrics.
  • Foreign Material Exclusion Guidelines (Report 1016315): This report reviews the technical considerations required to develop, implement, and manage a foreign material exclusion (FME) program, and describes how to evaluate prospective work tasks and activities against standardized criteria to identify the appropriate level of FME controls. It also provides guidance on how to monitor the health of an FME program.
  • Establishing an Effective Plant Fluid Sealing Technology Program (Report 101859): This report explains how to evaluate the effectiveness of an existing leakage management program, establish practical goals for an improved program, and select a leakage management program coordinator with the requisite skills.
  • Self-Assessment Guideline for Evaluating Operations and Maintenance Interactions for Improved Performance in Equipment Reliability (Report 1019548): This report describes a self-assessment process for examining two plant organizations-maintenance and operations-that interact daily and can have a major impact on equipment reliability. The accompanying spider chart illustrates the type of results obtained from this self-assessment, highlighting areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.
