Dear EPRI Generation Members
We're looking forward to seeing many of you a few weeks from now at our Generation Sector advisory meetings in Boston. These are important opportunities for us to share our technical progress and get your input as we work together to shape our future R&D strategies and meet the many challenges facing our industry.
A key ongoing activity in planning our R&D is developing issue roadmaps. We presented some early drafts to the Generation Advisory Council last February in New Orleans. Since then, we have continued to develop six EPRI roadmaps and eight Generation Sector-specific roadmaps. These include:
EPRI Strategic Issues
- Water Resource Management
- Near-Zero Emissions (NZE)
- Long-Term Operations (LTO) of nuclear and fossil assets
- Renewables
- Energy Efficiency
- Smart Grid
Generation Critical Issues
- Advanced Coal Generation
- Gas Generation Technology
- NZE
- Generation Fleet Transition
- Flexible Operation of Fossil Fleet
- LTO
- Renewable Generation Technology
- Water Management
The six EPRI strategic issue roadmaps, most of which reach across our traditional sectors, are being reviewed by the Research Advisory Council (RAC) and will be the focus of a joint RAC and Board of Directors joint meeting in November. Some of the critical research gaps identified in our Generation Sector roadmaps are components of one or more of the EPRI Strategic Issue roadmaps.
Although Generation has mapped eight Critical Issues, we have focused the Generation Council around four of these issues: NZE, Water, Fleet Transition, and Flexible Operations (Cycling). The purpose of engaging the Council in these activities is to provide greater line of sight between our programs, our advisors and the Council.
Roadmaps are dynamic and will change year-to-year. They are also designed to identify research gaps, whether associated with EPRI activities or gaps other organizations are or should be addressing. Roadmaps serve as a tool to facilitate discussion and clarify our objectives and direction. I encourage you, our members, to share your input with us as these roadmaps continue to evolve.
Sincerely,
Tom Alley
Vice President, Generation
