Interest Group Members Learn How Substations Are Going “Green” in Hong Kong
Members of the Green Substations Interest Group recently learned how China Light and Power is incorporating sustainability principles into the design, planning, construction, and operation of new electric substations in Hong Kong.  According to Mr. Gary Kwok, Senior Project Design Architect, implementation of sustainability principles includes

  •   choosing architectural designs that blend substations into urban sites,
  •   creating visual simulations that show stakeholders how the substations will look,
  •   performing fluid dynamics modeling to optimize natural ventilation,
  •   using precast building components to reduce waste,
  •   using renewable energy to power the substations, and
  •   investigating “green roofs” for enhanced cooling.

Mr. Kwok spoke in the first of several webcasts planned to inform Green Substation Interest Group members about ways to reduce the environmental footprint of electrical substations.  For more information, contact Jeff Clock, (845) 608-0642, jclock@epri.com.
