EPRI Participates in U.S. Department of Energy Environmental Mitigation Technology Summit
EPRI’s Doug Dixon was an invited attendee and speaker
at a recent U.S Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental
Mitigation Technology Summit, held June 2–3 in Washington,
DC. The purpose of the summit was to bring together
a group of experts—including developers, environmental
and engineering consultants, resource agency personnel,
government laboratory staff, and academic researchers—to
share information on how environmental mitigation is
being applied to hydropower projects. Facilitated
discussions identified the state of knowledge about
key impacts associated with conventional hydropower,
technological and operational measures currently used
to address the impacts, approaches for monitoring and
evaluating the effectiveness of environmental mitigation
measures, and the R&D needed to accelerate hydropower
development by improving the effectiveness and reducing
the cost of mitigation measures. This Summit developed
information about what new or improved environmental
mitigation measures are needed to enhance hydropower
production in the United States, how the cost of environmental
mitigation can be reduced, and how consensus can be
reached on solutions to environmental issues.
Dr. Dixon’s presentation focused on the utility and
potential of fish-friendly hydropower turbines.
Presentations and meeting notes will be posted on the
DOE
Hydropower website. For more information,
