Laboratory Study: Mercury Released to Water and Air From Flue Gas Desulfurization Products
Gustin, M. and K. Ladwig. “Laboratory Investigation of Hg Release from Flue Gas Desulfurization Products,” Environmental Science and Technology, Volume 44, Issue 10, 2010, pp. 4012–4018 (EPRI Product E230565).  This laboratory research investigated the release of mercury from wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) products into water and air.  The FGD products studied included calcium sulfite from inhibited-oxidation FGD systems, and both washed and unwashed gypsum from forced-oxidation systems.  Under laboratory conditions, most products released mercury into the water and all products released mercury into the air, especially when wet.  Unlike coal fly ash, FGD products generally did not adsorb mercury from the air.  For more information, contact Ken Ladwig, (262) 754-2744, keladwig@epri.com
