More on the Formation of Secondary Organic Aerosols
Chan, M.N., et al. “Characterization and Quantification of Isoprene-Derived Epoxydiols in Ambient Aerosol in the Southeastern United States," Environmental Science and Technology, 2010, 44(12):4590–4596.  Co-authored by EPRI’s Eladio Knipping and Stephanie Shaw, this paper presents results from field measurements made during the 2008 August Mini-Intensive Gas and Aerosol Study, when researchers chemically characterized and quantified particle-phase isoprene-derived epoxydiols for the first time.  The field measurements, together with laboratory studies by others, indicate that Isoprene-derived epoxydiols are important intermediaries in the formation of low-NOx secondary organic aerosols.  For more information, contact Eladio Knipping, (202) 293-6343, eknippin@epri.com, or Stephanie Shaw,(650) 855-2353, sshaw@epri.com.
