Quantifying Emissions From Cofiring Biomass
and Coal
In late April, EPRI researchers measured a suite of
particle- and gas-phase constituents at a power plant
cofiring biomass with coal. Air effluent, fuel, and
ash were sampled in an effort to better characterize
emissions from the burning of biomass. Emissions from
these types of plant operations are historically under-sampled.
The measurements were part of an EPRI Program on Technology
Innovation to assess the health and environmental impacts
of future power plant emissions. Particulate samples
will be used in future in vivo and in vitro toxicological
evaluations. Plans call for another sampling campaign
this summer at the same power plant burning only coal,
for comparison. For more information, contact Stephanie
