Progress on Continuous Measurement Methods for Particulate Matter
EPRI’s Stephanie Shaw described progress on the development of a continuous measurement system for nitrogen in both gas and particle phases at a recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program seminar.  Prototypes of the Integrated Continuous Aerosol Monitoring System were field-tested this winter at a site in the Southeastern Aerosol Research and Characterization network.  The research-grade instrument worked well for gas-phase measurements of nitric acid and ammonia, but refinement of particle-phase measurements of nitrate and ammonium is still ongoing.  Research is continuing toward the goal of a commercial-grade system.  The EPRI-funded research is being coordinated with related instrument development funded under EPA’s STAR grant process, exposing the research in a public forum to an expert technical audience.  For more information, contact Stephanie Shaw, (650) 855-2353, sshaw@epri.com.
