GTSP Releases Report Summarizing Its Phase 2 Findings
The Global Energy Technology Strategy Program (GTSP) released the “capstone” report of Phase 2 of its study of key climate mitigation technologies, entitled Global Energy Technology Strategy Addressing Climate Change: Phase 2 Findings from an International Public-Private Sponsored Research Program. EPRI is a founding member of the GTSP, located at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland. The report is a synthesis of more than 10 years of cutting-edge research on the role of technology in addressing climate change. Key findings include the following:
- Stabilizing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases requires fundamental transformations, especially in the energy system.
- Technology development and deployment are essential both to stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations and to controlling costs.
- A portfolio of technologies is necessary to manage the risks and costs of climate change and to respond to evolving conditions, including the challenge of ever-increasing emissions mitigation needed to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations.
- A portfolio of advanced energy technologies also helps manage the risks and costs of climate change inherent in diverse national and regional energy systems, natural resource endowments, and rates of economic development and growth—heterogeneities that will likely persist during this century.
- Realizing the potential of energy technologies and technology systems presents challenges in expanding the scale of deployment at every time and spatial scale ranging from the next few years to the entire century.
The report also presents analyses of the potential roles and the research, development, and demonstration needs for six technology groups that appear key in addressing climate change: carbon capture and sequestration, biotechnology and biomass, hydrogen systems, nuclear energy, wind and solar, end-use energy technologies, and non-CO2 greenhouse gases. The full report (8.5 MB) and an executive summary (4 MB) are available in pdf format. For more information or for printed copies, contact Tom Wilson, (650) 855-7928, twilson@epri.com. |
